We are pleased to announce the release of the Montreal Declaration, a powerful call for unity and renewal in Haiti. Join us by signing the declaration and supporting change in Haiti. Together, we can build a brighter future.
Haiti is facing a multidimensional crisis that significantly deteriorates the political, social, and security environment of the country. The socio-economic indicators paint a grim picture. The economy is in ruins. Furthermore, there is a chronic dysfunction spanning over a decade in the democratic institutions. This is so severe that the country has no elected officials at any level of the government. The spectacular assassination of President Jovenel Moïse in July 2021 marks in its symbolism and its impact the tipping point of a completely disintegrated state. Moreover, the violence, poverty, poor political practices, and criminality resulting from the quasi-collapse of the state have created a daily fear among Haitian families, preventing them from undertaking their activities. For instance, in the first quarter of 2023, Haiti suffered a significant loss of over 530 deaths and 160,000 people were displaced due to the armed gang warfare. The Office of the United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights estimates that 300 people have been injured and 277 kidnapped. There is an urgent need for action.
